Connections 2008: What If You Ran Microsoft?
- Posted by:
Editors
There's not a person in the IT industry who hasn't daydreamed about what it might be like to sit in the CEO's chair at Microsoft. (Except Steve Ballmer, of course. He's already sitting there.) So we decided to ask some Connections 2008 attendees what they would do in the same situation as part of our "If I Ran Microsoft..." video contest. Here are a few of the more interesting suggestions taken from the WinConnections show floor: "If I ran Microsoft, I'd change the help. Right now I don't find it very helpful! We need more examples of code." -- Jim...

VMworld 2008: VMware ESX 4.0 Coming Soon?
- Posted by:
Jeff James
Alessandro Perilli over at Virtualization.info authored an interesting blog post before the start of VMworld 2008, including some speculation on his part that the next-generation of VMware's ESX hypervisor -- ESX 4.0 -- may possibly be announced at the show. VMware did reveal some information about new ESX features during VMware CTO Dr. Steve Herrod's keynote on Wednesday morning, including some of the features that Perilli speculated would be in the next revision of ESX. Here's a partial excerpt from ...

Tech Ed 2008--Microsoft IT Eats Its Own Dogfood
- Posted by:
Sheila Molnar
Had a great conversation at Tech Ed with Barry Briggs, the Director of IT at Microsoft, about a classic Microsoft topic—eating your own dogfood. Basically, Briggs’s internal IT group runs prerelease versions of Microsoft products and files bug reports and provides other feedback. Microsoft has a history of putting prerelease software into production use at the company to work through tough problems at the enterprise level. Briggs says that the politically correct way to describe this internal testing is “the first and best” program. But everyone just calls it “eating your own dogfood” or...

Top Ten Net-Surfing Risks at Work
- Posted by:
Tony Howlett
Sometimes, the biggest threat to your network security can come from within, either intentionally or unintentionally. In fact, many breaches comes from someone on the inside doing something unintentionally that "invites" some external exploit in. Here is my list of the top ten list of dangerous activities to be doing on the Internet at work. Share these with your employees and let them know that their Internet excursions could bring risk to the company: 1. Opening forwarded emails with jokes, videos, pictures, etc. These are emerging as the biggest new threat to internal network security. Many...

Troubleshooting a Slow-Running Windows Server 2008
- Posted by:
Alan Sugano
We are in the middle of a major upgrade project for a new client. The client has two VMware ESX host servers running a variety of virtual server guests, including two domain controllers (DCs), File Server, Exchange Server 2007, SQL Server 2005, Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2007 and Terminal Server. All servers are running Windows Server 2008 as the base OS with a mix of x86 and x64. All the servers were prepped for an initial Exchange cut over last Friday. Earlier in the week, on Tuesday, we completed training on Exchange and SharePoint for the client and the servers ran flawlessly. ...

Green Means Go
- Posted by:
Christan Humphries
When it comes to being green, I can proudly say that my environmental consciousness is well pruned. I recycle everything that I can’t reuse, bring my own shopping bags to the store for locally grown produce, suffer through teenagers’ loud conversations about terrible music on my bus ride to work, and give an adequate amount of thought toward (maybe) starting my own compost pile. I find it quite easy to be green in my personal life, despite Kermit’s thoughts on the matter. But when the hot topic “green computing” started popping up in office conversations like SUVs in the '90s, I saw a whole new...

MD5 Collisions Put PKI At Risk
- Posted by:
Mark Joseph Edwards
A new paper outlines how it's possible to use MD5 collisions to spoof a legitimate certificate authority's (CA) certificate, which means someone could spoof the security of nearly any site - even banks. The basic problem is that two different blocks of data could have the exact same MD5 hash sum. That of course means that you can't totally rely on the MD5 algorithm to provide an adequate check and balance. Unfortunately some CA's still use MD5 to sign certificates - that's one of those "Really Bad Things ™" that we hear about now and then. Some of the offending CA's include (surprisingly) RSA Data Security, Verisign...

Systematic Paranoia
- Posted by:
Orin Thomas
As a security administrator you do have to assume that “they are all out to get you”. Not you specifically, but the resources it is your responsibility to manage. They aren’t doing this because you are guarding the crown jewels of Denmark. Attackers are trying every doorknob on the street hoping to find one unlocked, not just trying the ones where they suspect there is a brand new LCD TV. As a good security administrator you need to be systematic with your paranoia. Not only do you have to catalog the threats you face, you need to analyze and prioritize those threats. You need to do this in terms of the likelihood that the threat...

Self Paced or Instructor Led Training
- Posted by:
Orin Thomas
There are two basic ways of studying for certification. You do it all yourself or you go to a class. Before I go any further I’ll point out that I write Self Paced Training Kits for Microsoft, so there is a bit of an incentive for me to push one method over the other. On the other hand, I’ve also run instructor led courses. Anyway, now that that is out there, on with the post… Each type of study suits a particular person. If you simply can never find the time to study out of hours, or you need someone to give you a bit of a push when it comes to motivation, going to a class can be your best option. Some people simply need the routine...
